10 Things Most People Don’t Know About Me…

I realized that most of you know me but you may not really “know” me so here are 10 things that might surprise you.

  1. Until I left Children’s Hospital in June 2011 I had been in the Medical Field for 7 years! I was going to be a pediatrician.  I have never looked back after leaving.
  2. I worked as an EMT and my background is in Pediatrics, specifically Pediatric Neurology, which is what I did until 2011.
  3. I am an only child, and the only grandchild on both sides…can you say pressure cooker?? That’s okay, diamonds are formed from coal under immense pressure :)
  4. I could ski and ride horses practically before I could walk.
  5. I have only gotten where I am today because I get up every morning and look fear in the face and decide to push through it.
  6. When I left Children’s Hospital and decided to pursue Rodan and Fields full-time it was the scariest time in my life.  Looking back it has been the most rewarding thing I have ever done.
  7. The two reasons I do this business are simple.  I want to be completely debt free by the end of the year and I want to start a foundation for Young Jewish Adults.
  8. The amount of personal development that this business has bestowed upon me is beyond measure.  This business has taught me how to be a better leader, daughter, friend, mentor and how to have more courage, understanding, patience, and determination.  It has brought out the best in me and challenged me to confront the worst in me and change it for the better.
  9. I truly love helping people and connecting them.  3/4 times when I meet someone, I can connect them with someone and help them outside my business.  I love this! While my business and my products are amazing, I know they are not for everyone and that is okay – I get such joy from connecting them with someone who has what they are looking for!!
  10. Lastly, I am harder on myself than anyone else in my life.  What I have learned, however, is that success does take time, and I must celebrate the little and the big successes :)

Light in the Darkness

They say that it is always darkest before the dawn.  That life is full of ups and downs.  You must go down in order to propel yourself up further in the world.  Even the simple act of breathing illustrates this – you must empty your lungs before you can take another breath.

For me, being self-employed is a never- ending roller coaster.

There is something incredibly frightening and exhilarating at the same time about being completely in control of what you earn.   As of late, I have been in an envelope of darkness with my business.  Living in happiness with an unfortunate undertone of disappointment and fear.  As, I write this I wonder if anyone else feels similar feelings.

There is no doubt in my mind that I live a blessed beyond measure life.  I have an incredible family that no matter the bone-head things I do, they stand behind me; great friends who accept my quirks, imperfections, and even though they may not fully understand what I do or why they, support me and push me to be a better person; I have a great man friend in my life who I just get to have fun with; and lastly I have a job that allows me to help others on my own terms.  See what I mean – blessed beyond measure!

The question remains, why is there this cover of darkness covering my professional life?  I have racked my brain for answers and they all led me back to the very thing I have struggled with my whole life – perfectionism.

Perfectionism – the curse of the only child – defined by Wikipedia as:

Perfectionism, in psychology, is a belief that a state of completeness and flawlessness can and should be attained. In its pathological form, perfectionism is a belief that work or output that is anything less than perfect is unacceptable. At such levels, this is considered an unhealthy belief, and psychologists typically refer to such individuals as maladaptive perfectionists.

While I might not have the extremes of this particular definition I do know that the hardest thing for me is to realize is that success is not all or nothing, it is gradual.   Just because I am not yet one of the top income earners, or even a LV, it doesn’t mean that I am not successful with my business.   For example, let’s look at some numbers. 11.  11 is the number of business partners I have. 15.  15 is the number of happy product users I have. Now let’s take a closer look into those numbers and the source of my unhappiness.

They say that in this business it is a numbers game.   I think life is a numbers game.  How many people have you encountered before you found your best friends, those in your inner circle that you share your most hidden secrets…10, 100, 10,000?   Better yet how many men must one date before they find their beshart, the one they want to build a life with and marry?  How many CPAs, Stylists, Nail Techs, Realtors, etc have you gone through  until you found the perfect fit?   You get the point.  Now let’s talk about my numbers.

It is not surprise that I am not where I want to be with my business.  Don’t misunderstand, I  have a successful business, my income goes up every month, and I have helped many but I am not where I want to be with my business, but, perhaps the better question is – where do I think I should be with my business?  I spent the past week in Aspen reflecting on this very question.

How was I going to get to where I want to be?  The answer?  Patience.

I just finished reading a wonderful book “Quantum Success” and a particular phrase has stuck with me.   “You must have a timeline, not a time frame.”  For a perfectionist this is truly one of the hardest pills to swallow.  To admit that we cannot control everything (or anything?), that things don’t always look they way we think they should, and that we must celebrate the small successes along the way to our end goal.

The other answer I stumbled upon?  Being your own boss is hard.   It takes a lot of falling flat on your face and getting up, pushing through the walls that you imagine exist, getting up everyday and doing your best, lastly, remembering the passion and reason why you do what you do.  On the other hand the other thing I have learned is that just because it is hard it does not mean it is impossible and it also means it is worth it!

The life lesson about how to get out of the darkness?  Perspective, gratitude, and patience.  Those are the three keys to living a great life, to break out of the darkness, and grow into the destiny that is waiting.

What is a pyramid scheme?

It is amusing to me that some people think that what I do is a “pyramid scheme” when they are already part of the real pyramid scheme….

The difference between my business and the above illustration?

A level playing field…it doesn’t matter your background, your degree, your experience…the only thing that dictates your success is you and how much work you put in.   What you put in, you get out – which is not the case with corporate america.  In corporate america what you put in goes into someone else’s pocket.

Leaving corporate america was scary and my business is not easy but it is worth it.  Food for thought.

Happy Friday
